Question
my chow is 5 years old, not neutered. This past summer he had sores on his testicles that were weeping pus. i took him to the vet and he said i had trimmed the hair in that area too short and that he was exposed to the elements... i put on polysporin and they healed... now he has it again.. i have not trimmed his hair in months.. his testicles look swollen, the sores looks like the skin is off,red and weeping pus again.. he would not of scrapped them on anything..he goes out and right back in, he is not around any other dogs.. could slate flooring in the house cause this? i am going to call and see the vet on monday.. but it looks very painful, is there anything i can put on to ease the pain..or give him anything?  could he have a infection? i did have a chow that had open sores on his body from chewing at his fur..but this chow can't reach his testicles so it can't be from chewing or licking. thank you very much.

Answer
This is scrotal dermatitis and it is usually caused from the testicles becoming moist either from laying on a moist floor or from licking.  It could be that an antibiotic creme would help again, but steroids work very well for this condition to take away the swelling and the itching.  See if he will lay on something softer than a slate floor.
