Canine Oral Melanoma

Question
QUESTION: Our Scotty dog has a tumor on the roof of her mouth.  She has been seen by a VET.  Because of her age and a globular heart that won't tolerate surgery, we did not biopsy.  But we know stats. say it is Oral Melanoma.  The tumor has started to develop a crater in the center and is raw.  This scottie is my 20 mos olds best friend.  She loves to try to get her to lick her hands and face.  We do discourage this-but it often happens before we can stop it.  Does the supposed cancer, especially with the tumor skin now open, pose a health threat to my daughter?  Common sense say no-but thought I would play it safe.  Thank you.

ANSWER: I have looked at dozens of articles on this all over the veterinary world online and have not found any evidence of this being an issue. I am concerned however, that a 20 month old dog has this disease.

I know it's common, but she is so young to have this. I makes me wonder if Scotties are on the list of dogs that commonly get this. I am really sorry for this bad news. Have you spoke with your vet about using the vaccine on her?
It doesn't cure the cancer but can certainly help suppress it.
It can give her an extended and less painful time.

I am truly sorry Sharon. Scotties are such great dogs. But I am sure your daughter is probably fine around her.

QUESTION: Thanks.  The scottie is 11 years old-our daughter is 20 months.  I do understand this is a common disease in scotties-because of the dark pigment in the mouth.  Also-we are not doing the cancer vaccines because the Vet is not certain of her life expectancy due to the very enlarged heart.  The vaccines in our area are over $1500 for the first 4 treatment and that does not include the biopsy to ensure it is cancer or the oncologist appointment.  Thank you for your help-I really appreciate it.

Answer
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I guess I didn't read this sentence "This scottie is my 20 mos olds best friend." very well.

I understand about the cost of the vaccine coupled with the heart problem. I am truly sorry to see this. Such a shame! Scotties are such great dogs!
My thoughts will be with your little friend....
