Squirrel care

Question
I received a 6 month old squirrel for Christmas this year since my family knew how much i love squirrels. He got adjusted to the house quite well and i have started letting him out to exercise and play around the house and leave his door open and he goes back in the cage for food or water or when he is tired, however he does not seem to stand still for even a minute, all he does is jump from one corner of the cage to the other even after he was out the whole day, and he seams very frightened of humans despite living in captivity all its life. The store owner has no such problem and the squirrel just climbs up to her and lets her hug him.
How should i take care of him so he gets used to used to people so that he lets me pet him or pick him up?

Answer
I don't know about this Vlad. Where I live it is illegal to have squirrels as pets. What kind of squirrel is this?
The only squirrels I have cared for were wild Gray and Douglas squirrels that I raised for rehab and release. Now with those, they tend to develop a preference for whomever was feeding them the most when they were younger, until they get more wild then no one can touch them.

So what I am saying is that the store owner was handling these babies and now they are attached to her. But after having him for a few months and being quiet and gentle with him, petting him gently at times, he should start to come around more to you and become more 'your' pet.

It won't happen overnight. Find some type of treat that is healthy for him and start to give that to him at the same time everyday, in your room, when it is quiet. That way he will start to associate that treat with you and quiet time.

Be very careful with this squirrels diet and do NOT feed him sunflower seeds. These seem to be a good way to cause Metabolic Bone Disease in these captive squirrels.

Get him a cooked chicken bone now and then to gnaw on in his cage. That will help him get the right kind of calcium that he needs.

That is about all I can tell you. You should talk to the store owner if he doesn't calm down with you.
