Sedation question for my dog.

Question
Hi there, I am a proud owner of a French Bulldog. She is 2 years old and she is EXTREMELY paranoid about nail clippings. One time I had to force her down and have my wife cut the nails, and we both got scrathed so bad that we almost needed stitches! The second time, we had her put to sleep just for her nails at the Vet.

Her nails(claws) are now getting so long that it is deforming her paws.

Is there any medication that I can obtain so that she can get sedated so that we can clip her nails??

We tried a mild sedative over the counter at petsmart but it did not work.

I need to get her almost tranquilized..

She is 25 lbs and otherwise perfectly healthy.

Thank you,
Man Sunwoo

Answer
I would recommend giving her Rescue Remedy to help with the anxiety.  You can also try giving her 25 mg of Benadryl as well as 1 capsule of Valerian Root from the health food store.  I would try giving all three to her, wait an hour, repeat the Rescue Remedy and then attempt to do her toe nails at home but only one paw at a time.  Hopefully, you can get one foot done in a minute, then let her up and give her treats.  Don't try to do all her feet at one time so she hopefully will regain some trust in you.  Also, at other times grab her feet and play with them and praise her wildly and give her a treat to reinforce the good behavior.   Otherwise you can ask your veterinarian for oral acepromazine but sometimes it can make them more reactive to sounds.
