Cat that is no longer nursing

Question
I have kittens that were recently weaned from their mother and given to new homes.  The mother cats nipples have gotten hard and swollen and seem sore. Is this normal due to no longer nursing, kind of like a womans breasts do, when they are drying up? Or is this something I should consult my veterinarian about?  thank you.

Answer
If the mother is eating and acting normally, you can just monitor her for a few days.  You can try compresses on her but often times this just aggravates the cat.  If she is developing a fever or not acting herself, then a trip to the vet is warranted.  Best thing is to schedule an appointment to have her spayed.
