Elderly with cat

Question
My elderly mother has a newly adopted 2 yr-old cat (2/3 months now from PetOrphins) that started scratching quite a bit.

She called a "visiting vet" that she knew from her previous cats. This vet apparently could not diagnose the itching but decided to take blood for some kind of internal bacteria that apprarently 4/5 cats have, and promptly gave my mother a course of antibiotics and medicine to stop the resulting diarhia. Needless to say, my mother is somewhat overwhelmed with trying to administer these medications on this young cat (already skittish as a tamed ferral).

Does this seem like over-prescriping? I asked my mother if this was related to the itching, and she was told by the vet that she was not sure.

I feel a little on guard because her last cat died of cancer -- finally a seizure on the way back from receiving chemotherapy at this vet's hospital. At the time I thought that the continued medication/treatments on the dying cat seemed to have no sense of when "enough was a enough."

As I am not knowledgeable about pet medicine, I don't know if this vet is practicing to the best of what she herself thinks is the best care, or she is "over practicing."

Feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Answer
Oh Boy!  It is hard to say if the Vet was over doing it.  There are many ways she could have gone.  In her mind she decided this was the way she wanted to go....  It is right?  who knows, it is an Educated Guess...Vets and Medical Doctors are Practicing Medicine.  They do what they think is best.

Now, in the case of Chemo and going over board!  There are many Vets and professionals that have different opinions on how to care for Cancer.

I like to go the Natural route if possible.  There is a great skin and coat supplement for cats:  NuVET Plus -  A Natural powder that you place in the cat's food or in some tuna.  This is given each day and costs about .50 cents per day... It is guaranteed to stop the itching and scratching or your money back.

If the antiboitics don't work, tell your MOM about the NuVET Plus-
Not Sold in stores - Only thru the manufacturer or breeders.
