Question
I recently brought my cat to the vet & she found a heart murmer. Blood work was done & it shows that "Ruthie" has an overactive thyroid & elevated levels in I think it was liver function.
What is the BEST method of treatment, & what would happen if this condition went untreated?

Answer
Hello!

It would be very inappropriate for me to say something like ''this is the best treatment'' , since I havent examined her, any havent seen the blood tests either, so your vet only can decide on that.  But I can explain you hyperthyroidism and tell you about some of the methods of treatment. This is a pathologic, sustained, high overall metabolism caused by high circulating concentration of thyroid hormones. It is most often caused by autonomously hyperfunctioning nodules of the thyroid gland. Rare cases are caused by thyroid carcinoma. Surgical thyroidectomy is one of the treatments in cats. There are also antithyroid drugs most often recommended like Methimazole. Beta-adrengergic blocking drugs are sometimes used to treat some of the cardiovascular and neurologic effects of excess hormone. Radioiodine is as safe and effective treatment but unfortunately its use is limited becasue of the small number of vet. facilities offering this treatment. The prognosis (chance of getting better in other words) is excellent for uncomplicated disease. For thyroid carcinoma, the prognosis is poor.
As for the elevated levels of liver function, I can not tell you an exact thing since I dont know which levels are elevated. If it is high ALT activity levels, it is very common in hyperthyroidism. High AST, ALP levels are less common and are caused by more severe complications of hyperthroidism.
I hope that I have been able to help you. Like I said before only your vet will be able to decide the best choice of treatment for your cat. Please keep me informed on how it goes.
Kind Regards,
