spay/neuter tineline for new pup

Question
Hi there, We are in the process of finding a breeder for a cream-coloured golden retreiver.  We have found one that we love but are hesitant to get a pup from her because of her spay/neuter agreement.  If we get a male pup, she wants us to not neuter him until he is 2years.  If a female, she said 10 months or after her first heat.  Is this "normal" and what do you feel is the appropriate age.  I am particularly interested in your response as I see you have a natural and holistic approach.  Thanks so much!

Answer
Ideally a female should be spayed before her first heat to get the most protective effect against breast cancer.  It is not necessary for them to go through one heat cycle as many people still think.  By standard we recommend 5-6 months of age for both spaying and neutering.  I would not recommend waiting until 2 yrs to have the male neutered as this give more time for testosterone to contribute to potentially unwanted aggression, roaming and other un-wanted male behaviors.  Allowing the male to be neutered at 10-12 months would give him more time to develop male characteristics but is still young enough that he should not develop any problems until then...maybe you can make a compromise with the breeder.

I would ask her for her reasonings because I do not think there is any sound medical reason for waiting.
