Post Feline Urinary Blockage

Question
I just got my 6 year old male Coco back from the vet 24 hours ago after he was catheterized for a urinary blockage and kept over night. The vet prescribed Royal Canine SO Feline canned food for him, which is "specially formulated" for his condition. After looking over the ingredients, I decided to do a little bit of research on my own before purchasing the prescription stuff. The vet told me Coco had crystals in his urine, therefore he needs to be kept on a prescription canned food only diet to maintain the pH of his urine. After doing a little bit of reading, I'm starting to see that most of these prescription diets are primarily composed of the same low quality ingredients as other over the counter foods. Will Innova EVO 95% canned be good enough for my cat based upon his recent condition? The high phosphorus levels that I keep reading about in EVO are primarily what are keeping me worried. Since returning home, he has had a very low drive to eat, and he has been constantly licking the area where they put the catheter through.

Also, I have been giving him a product made to promote urinary tract health that contains cranberry extract in the form of a tuna flavored chew, and I wanted to know if this was safe for him to take during this time that he is recovering? Your answer is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Tarrick -

I have had a lot of experience with urinary blockage in cats.  The food in question is actually very good for your cat.  There are a few other specially formulated diets on the market that will help to prevent crystal formation in the urine.  The ingredients found in these diets are not low quality - a great deal of research has proven that these diets are quite useful in controlling crystal formation.

If you would like to treat your cat with holistic medicine, find a veterinarian that is willing to use holistic ingredients.  Urinary blockage in cats is a very serious disease - do not try to treat it yourself.  There is a great likelihood that this will happen again and it is best to find a veterinarian that you trust or you will be doing a great disservice to your cat.
