Puppy doesnt know when to STOP eating

Question
My 11 week old great pyrenees does not seem to know when to stop eating. We would like to put her on a "free food" system as we have done with our other 2 dogs (another Pyr and a toy poodle) however she doesn't know when to stop. I'm afraid she would eat until she made herself sick. We did not have this problem with our other animals, any help you can give would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

Answer
Unfortunately Jennifer not all dogs are created equal and so not all of them can be fed this way. It isn't healthy anyway so you might have to schedule feed all of them at once. She will not only make her self sick, but she could kill herself eating this way.

The practice of always having a full bowl of dog food out for your dog to eat when he sees fit, is really not recommended at all. Dogs that free-feed tend more to obesity than dogs with scheduled feeding times since it is almost impossible to monitor how much your dog is actually eating each day.

Dog's should be schedule fed and each one should have their food measured out with an 8 oz measuring cup. That way they are getting the exact amount for their body weight.

Dogs that are fit and healthy are fed on time on a schedule with a set amount of food. I recommend feeding in the morning as it gives the dog all day to burn off the calories.

Puppies need to be fed two-three times a day- but the food is the total amount for her weight for the day divided into those feedings. She needs to be a on a large breed puppy formula so she doesn't grow too fast and have joint problems.

One of the foods formulated for this is Science Diet Large Breed Puppy Growth. After about a five yr study Hills found out that the calcium/phosphorus levels are the biggest influence on bad joint growth in dogs. That combined with unbalanced minerals and nutrients caused years of suffering in these dogs from hip and elbow problems. Large Breed Growth is formulated to prevent these problems from the start.

That is what you will find everywhere Jennifer. Scheduled feeding is the way to go. If nothing else then feed the puppy first before the other dogs eat and keep the food up from her the rest of the time.
