Question
Hilary,                                               I have a long haired male cat and his hair is falling out in clumps on his legs, side and back by his tail down to the skin. Any answer you could give me would be helpful. Thank you. Dona

Answer
Hi Dona.  There are many skin ailments that can cause hairloss.  Does the skin under the lost fur look like healthy skin?  Or is it dry/scaley, pink and sore looking?
This could be an allergic reaction to something.  Have you used any new cleaners, detergents, ect? Food allergies are very common as well.  Have you changed foods recently?  If so, this could be causing an allergic reaction.
Hyperthyroidism is a disease that many cats develop, in which causes hairloss as well.
I would definately recommend a physical examination by your veterinarian to ensure that there is no Hyperthyroidism present, or any other ailments that are in need of treatment.  If this is an allergy, your veterinarian may be able to prescribe a low dose steroid to clear the reaction up.
I hope this has answered your question and please feel free to ask any more questions you may have.
Please keep me posted as to how your baby is doing and give him some kisses for me!
Hilary
