Question
I have a small dog, 9 years old, who has developed tendonitis in her front (ankle), she is very active and likes to jump on and off of the couch.  I was wondering what we can do to alleviate the pain as she will favor that leg.  Can we give her human glucosamine? and how do we give it to her, and what dosage?

Thank you,
Shelley

Answer
Hi Shelley!  Your veterinarian can prescribe you glucosamine tablets made just for dogs, which would be way more healthy or your little girl.  Etogesic is also a great medication your veterinarian can give you.
If you are looking for an over-the-counter remedy, try Bovine Cartlidge and Shark Fat Pills.  These are excellent, holistic ways to relieve joint, muscle and tendon pains.
You mentioned that she is a small dog, so I am figuring around 10-15lbs?  If this is correct, you can give her about a quarter of the tablets per day.  These are herbal remedies, so there are no horrible side effects if your dog accidently gets an extra dose one day, so never panic.
Also, putting a teaspoon of Flax Seed Oil on her food once per day will help keep those tendons lubricated, and sometimes the Flax Seed Oil alone is enough to cause relief.  You may want to try the Flax Seed Oil first, for a two week period to see how it goes.  If you do not see enough of a relief, try adding the other herbs along with the Flax Seed Oil.
I hope this has helped.
Please keep me posted as to how she does,
Hilary
