Question
i live in the caribbean and have an adult dog with demadectic mange. i give a treatment of revolution monthly. her paws and chest have developed a bumpy pink rash and it appears to be itchy. can you suggest any treatment?

Answer
Revolution will not do anything for demodex mange.  The bumps are from a skin infection and the dog needs to be bathed with an antibacterial shampoo and should also be on antibiotics for several weeks. The secondary pyoderma is very common with demodex mange.

Some dogs respond to weekly or bi-weekly insecticidal dips with a compound called amitraz.  Ask any veterinarian if they have this.

The other thing that some people are using is called ivermectin.  It is a cattle dewormer that has activity against mange mites when used orally at a high dose.  Consult with a veterinarian about using this medicine.
