loss of fur in cat

Question
I just took in an indoor cat that previous tenants abandoned.  There are large areas of no fur along insides of back legs, also small pathces of no fur on front legs, by back "knees" and behind & in front of ears.  Neighbor who has lots of cats says it could be due to stress. The skin looks normal, no crusts or other irregulariites.  I'm feeding him Petguard wet and Katzenflocken dry.  I've only had him a week, so I don't know how long it took to lose
all this fur, and it's too soon to tell if it's starting to grow back.  What could this be?

Answer
Bless you for taking in this cat. What it sounds like it that this cat has bilateral alopecia, which is hair loss in quantity. Most of the time this is caused by the cat licking it off himself. Sometimes fleas start this and sometimes it's hormonal or there are other issues.
I have never heard of the foods you are feeding so I cannot tell you if they are any good at all. They sound like store brands and that in itself is not good.

I would get him on a bag of Science Diet Adult Sensitive Skin dry and wet and give him a good month on it to see if the hair grows back. It takes three weeks before you will see any changes in the coat.

If there is no hair growth in that length of time it might be some other issues he is dealing with and will need a visit to the vets.

Switch him slowly over to the new food to prevent an upset tummy but most cats love the taste of the new food and readily take it.

I hope this solves your question. This is not uncommon but it isn't seen on a daily basis. Let me know how he is doing in about a month.
