Cat not using litter

Question
We have 2 cats, one is about 6 and the other is 1 1/2.  We have had both of these cats since they were a few months old.  For the past couple of months, the 1 1/2 year old has been urinating on bean bag chairs and other stuff with the same kind of material.  Today, he went right up next to the clean litter and urinated outside of it on the floor.  We have 2 litter boxes, one upstairs and one downstairs that we clean very often.  We have always used the same type of kitty litter.  I was thinking of taking him to the vet, but figured I'd ask around first.  Thanks

Answer
Hello Derek!

Yes! Take the kitty to see the vet! The first signs of feline innapropriate elimination (FIE) is urinating outside the box! Most of the time it's a urinary tract infection.

Once it's been diagnosed if the cat has an infection or not, your vet will work with you to make sure its not a substrate problem with the litter choice or the cat just does not like that box anymore.

Some cats like hooded boxes, other like unhooded, some cats like scoopable litter, others hate it. Always use unscented litter with cats.

Hope that helps!
