How do we introduce a 6 yr....

Question
How do we introduce a 6 yr. old Maltese to people and other animals when the dog has been kept inside and with one person for most of its life.    A friend of my mother's died and his dog was left in her care.  She is an adorable little dog but very frightened of everything.   She seems very nervous with anyone but my mother.  My mother is pretty much the only person she has been with other then her owner.   My mom is 86 yrs old and having this dog is the best thing that happened but ultimately I will have to assume the responsibility which I readily accept.  I own a Bichon and a parrot and really need to know what steps I take to introduce the new miss to my two babies.   My dog is 8 yrs old and the sweetest dog ever.  She is very social and  kind.  She loves all animals and people so my dog will not be a problem.   What do I do?

In addition, I have consulted with the Vet who
took care of her and found that she has a Cherry
Eye which they state requires surgery.  It hasn't
been taken care of in the past and I would like to
have it surgically corrected but will this create a greater social problem and trauma for the dog.

It has been one month since her owner died and
she is living with my Mom and seems content with
the situation.

Any help will be greatly appreciatd.

Thank you for your kindness.

Answer
I would recommend adding a DAP/Comfort Zone diffuser to help reduce anxiety as well as using Flower Essences, in particular RESCUE REMEDY....give a few drops orally throughout the day and in the water dish.

I would isolate her to one room and let her out to explore the house at different times throughout the day while the other dog is on the leash or in a crate and the parrot's cage is covered.  She will slowly gain confidence and become less frightened over time.  When she is comfortable you can let your dog off the leash or out of the crate and uncover the parrot.  It may take a few days or a few weeks.

You can wait on the cherry eye surgery--it is mostly cosmetic.  When she is adjusted, then I would have it corrected.
