Cycling my new tank?

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I just set up my new 46 gallon bow front tank.  It has been running for about
a day now.  Everything works: light, heater, filter, no leaks etc.
So I want to start the cycling process.  I was checking websites on how to do
a fishless cycle.  One of the ways caught my eye.
It said that you can take gravel and/or filter media from an established tank
and put it in your new tank.  It also said that you can put it in a sock or nylon.
I like this idea and it said that it is the quickest way, but I have a few little
questions.

If I put some gravel in my new tank in some nylon how much should I put in?
Could I put the filter media in some nylon too? - I can't put it into the new
filter because they are completely different.
Do you think this way will be quick?

I want to do this right, because I hate losing the first fish you get.
Thanks a lot!

ANSWER: A better way is to go to the aquarium store and ask them for "dirty Water"  which is pretty much the same thing you are talking about... the difference is that you don't have to remove anything from the tank when you are done... dirty water is usually free... dave

QUESTION: Okay, I wanted to try the gravel and filter media idea.  I put some fake plants,
gravel, and some filter media into my 46 gallon last night.
This morning I tested the water.  This is what it said,
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 5.0

Is this good?

Answer
Hi Amy:  It would depends on what the other readings have been. If the ammonia has been zero... then your tank has not began to cycle... If this is the case I would add a pinch of fish food each morning until the cycle process begins.  If the ammonia levels have been above zero then things are progressing nicely.  Wait another day and if the levels are still zero for ammonia and nitrite then you can add fish... dave
