Question
sick pleco
sick pleco
I have a 70 Gallon tank 4 large tin foil barb(7 years old), 1 large pleco(7 years old), 1 syndo cat(5 years old), some goldfish for feeders the Tin foils will eat), but not eaten yet (they are over 2 months old). My tank came down with fin & tail rot. The tin foil barbs had bloody bruises on their dorsal area, and they had linty looking fuzz. I treated the tank with MARDEL Maracyn-Two. The tin foils healed and looked so much better after the 5 days of treatment. I did a partial water change, about 20%. The pleco still looked raggedy. The syndo never looked sick. I've also been doubling the salt to about 1 cup each water change.  Earlier this week I did another change, about 40%. The trouble is water temp. The AC in our house is 80 the tank is about 80-82.(again they have lived in this tank for 7 years,so temp hasn't been a problem before)I can't affored a chiller. The tin foils look healed, with no lingering effects. the Pleco still looks really ill. Dorsal fin has a hole, and very little skin between spines. he's a little discolored on his sides near gills. The question is, do you think he will recover? or should i remove him to a salty bath, hospital tank? I only have a 15 gal tank to use for a hospital. it would really cramp him as he and the tin foils are about 8 inches in length. only he would be going to the 15 gal tank/ for more treatment. I will post this and I'm sure there will be questions as my description is probably lacking some specifics. thank you in advance for the expert help. peggy and the pleco

Answer
Peggy,

This first thing to remember is that the tank is a fresh water tank. Doubling up on the salt is not a good thing. The ratio is 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water going in. 1 cup is too much and I believe the pleco is suffering from that. I would put him in the hospital tank for now with no salt. Make sure the tank is cycled. I also do not see any gravel in the tank. If there is some good if not there should be. That is where the beneficial bacteria is that the fish need to help stay healthy. If your heater is on, I would lower it to 78 degrees. That way, it won't kick on unless the temp drops. Keep the tank water clean and make sure you are doing 25% water changes weekly. Let me know how the pleco is doing after he has been moved to the other tank.
