Betta fish chewing rock sound

Question
I've had a betta fish for several months now.  For the past couple of weeks though, every now and then I'll hear him making sounds as if he's chewing on rocks.  He looks like he's trying to clear his throat b/c his tilts his head up & his gills protrude out slightly.  I only have glass pebbles in there that are almost as big as he is, so he definitely can't have put that in his mouth.  Is he regurgitating his food & chewing them again?  It's definitely loud though...like he's really chewing on pieces of rocks.

Answer
Dear Jacey,
Hmm.. that is strange. The only thing I can think of is your betta is crunching on pellet food. I have heard many fish crunch pellets and it is quite loud! They also act as your betta does as they are chewing it in a special area in their throats.

It could just be that he is just crunching on pellets. It's definately a weird sound to hear. Be sure he isn't having trouble chewing his pellets. Small size pellets are best. Some betta foods have pellets that are really too big.

I really hope this helps!
Best wishes,
Karen~
