Question
Once Happy Beta
Once Happy Beta
Hi,

About 5 months ago, I bought a Male Crown Beta. When I first got him, he always flared at the slightest thing around him. If I came close to the tank, he would flare. Or, he would swim a little, flare, put his fins down, swim a little more, and flare again. But over the last month I've noticed he's not been flaring at all. I can come close to the tank, put my finger close to it or even put my finger close to the top of the water. He used to put out all his fins at me, even the ones from under his gills. But he doesn't do it at all anymore. Even if scared, he just swims away quickly. Also, he used to swim all over his tank and he was so vibrant in color and so curious but lately, he's either stayed at the top of the water only in one place, or he'll stay at the bottom in only one spot and he's losing color. He used to have a fully black head and face, but now its turning a dirty white color. His body was a dark red but its getting lighter and lighter. I know he has fin rot, and I've been trying to treat him for it. But it doesn't seem to be improving and he's even starting to get bloated now..I've read about giving him a thawed frozen pea recently, and I will try that for his bloating...
But..the thing is, he still eats happily and aggressively almost. He eats perfectly fine but he no longer flares, and he has lost interest in swimming around and his color is fading.
I've tried to keep his water clean and change it regularly but nothing is helping, not even medicine. I'm afraid my fish is...dying. :'( I don't want to lose my fish but I really don't know what to do for him anymore..
Someone with a community fish tank with a healthy male and female beta along with other fish said that maybe my beta is possibly lonely. Is this true? Maybe he has lost a 'desire' to live because he's upset/stressed?
Please help me...

PS
The image I have attached is how my fish used to look when I first bought him. Flared, full fins, bright color, and a curious attitude.
Now just imagine the opposite for my poor little guy..

Answer
Kristina,

It is actually good that he is not flaring all the time. If he continued to do that he would end up stressing himself out. He is comfortable with you now so the not flaring is ok and not a problem. I would guess that his water is not warm enough along with the suffering from fin rot. He is a tropical fish and needs his water between 80 and 82 degrees at all times. What are you treating him with? As for the bloating make sure the pea is cooked and shelled before you give it to him. Fast him for 2 days before you feed the pea and for two days after. Pick one day a week where you do not feed him and the next day feed him the pea. This will help prevent swim bladder disease. He is not lonely. Male Betta's prefer to be by themselves. I believe that once the water is heated you will see a great improvement in him as far as the fading goes. Let me know what medication you are using to treat the fin rot.
