Other wise has energy and tries to swim. eyes look fine and tries to eat. Swims to bottom of tank and then floats up. What is it?

Answer
Hi Alfredo,
If your fish is falling to bottom and struggling to swim up, or floats and cant swim down then it is because the fish has swim bladder disease.  The swim bladder that regulates the equilibrium of the fish is affected.  9 times out of 10 the reason for swim bladder disease is constipation.  Other reasons is due to virus or bacterial infections.  The best way to relieve of constipation in fish is to feed them thawed mushed peas.  Research shows that peas resolve any issue with constipation in fish, no one knows how.  Since we dont know if it is due to constipation or bacterial, I would also treat it for bacterial infections also.  Give him erythromycin or TMP sulfa.

Dont feed the fish for a few days because the swim bladder might possibly be due to constipation.  Switch up foods or presoak the food to allow it to be moist and soften before feeding.  Also keep up with the water changes.  It will encourage healing and best health, also allows the immune system to fight back.

Since he is floating, there is another alternative.  You can poke a needle into the swim bladder and suck out some air.  But it should not be done if you have no experience in doing this.

If the fish is not eating.  It will be hard to treat the fish so it may have to be euthanized.
