Question

white fish
hi
i have had a small 18l tank now for 2 weeks.  it is coldwater and we have 2 goldfish in it.  they get fed 2 - 3 times a day with goldfish sticks.  there is a filter in thre tho im not sure how good it is , the water is ever so slightly cloudy but they may be because there are 3 living plants in there.  One of the gold fish is bright orange and is the larger of the two, that one seems fine.  the smaller one is white with orange spots, some of his scales appear to be not as shiny, possibly raised a little and he keeps going behind one of the plants and effectively curling himself around the base at an angle.  I presumed he was unwell but as soon as i feed  the fish he swims up to the food and his swimming is fine, not upside down or anyting altho he seems to get tired and floats upwards for a few seconds and then swims again.  the other fish does seem to be more dominant and seems to chase the white one.  Is the white fish ill, unsociable or being bullied?

Answer
Kate,

It looks like your fish has Dropsy. When you got the tank, did you cycle it for at least 2 to 3 weeks before adding any of the fish? You can treat your fish with Maracyn-2, but do it as soon as you can because this can be fatal. Its ok to treat him in the tank, since Dropsy isn't contagious. I would also set the heater at 82 degrees, but no higher. You can also add an air stone going full blast, since the warm water depletes the oxygen and the air stone helps get it back.

I hope this help, and let me know if it doesn't and we can try something else. But if it was caught in time, this should help him.
