Question

sick mollie
I have a black mollie that is mother to the other 3 in the tank.  She seems to have that rot or dropsy maybe, I even see a couple of spots like ick.  I dont know which treatments to use how many I can use at once or where to start first.  We have been dealing with the ick for some time and have had it cleared up and despite water change (25%) and ick treatment, we still have a couple of spots and this stuff around her eyes, and what appears to be body rot or something.  She still eats and stays at the top of the tank, just treading water if you will swims only once on a while.  PH is 7.6, that is the only testing that I have done have to go to pet store in the am, so what should I get or do now>  I have done 1 ick treatment today and I gave also some melafix, athis am earlier.  Im new at this and dont know which things I can use now so as to not over stress with chemicals.  Thanks so much for your help.

Answer
Kim,

Ok, lets try to treat the Ich. You didn't mention if the other fish are showing signs of Ich as well. I am old school when it comes to treating my fish, so give this a try. If you don't have a heater, you need to go get on. Turn the heater up to 86 degrees. Heat kills Ich faster. Then to the tank add 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt ( dissolved before adding to tank) per 1 gallon of aquarium water. For example, if your tank is 10 gallons then you will add 10 teaspoons of salt to the tank. Make sure you dissolve the salt in water before adding it to your tank. Add an air stone to the tank, we want lots of bubbles. The added heat takes out much needed oxygen for the tank so the air stone adds it back in. Don't be alarmed if for a couple of days your fish looks like she is getting worse. It's patience time. Somewhere around the 6th day you will start to see a change. Please keep them with this treatment at least 10 days to two weeks. I am having you treat the whole tank because if one fish has Ich, they all do.

Let me know how this is doing and if there are any more question, please do not hesitate to ask. That is what I am here for.
