QuestionI have a cherry barb and some mollys. The cherry barb
recently began acting strange like hes digging in the
gravel and swimming with his head pointed down like hes
doing a headstand. Is this normal behaviour?
AnswerHi Pete,
Digging is not a normal behavior in fish. Is the fish scratching or looking as if he's trying to scratch an itchy part against the rocks? If so, it may be a parasite that's causing him to do this. Parasites, like Ich (looks like small slat grains on fish), can easily be treated with an anti-parasitical medication availible at your local fish store.
Without a picture or description, I can't be sure what's wornd with your Barb. If you notice any abnormal signs, don't hesitate to ask a follow-up question!
Right now, I would recommend doing a 20% water change every two days, as a preventative measure to reduce the chance of infection.
The Cherry Barb is probably quite lonely. Barbs should be kept in groups of at least 4-5, for best health.
Good luck, and Happy Fishkeeping!
