Fish tank water problem

Question

Fish tank
I have a little fish tank (3 gallon) with 4 neons on it. The tank doesn't have any real plants and everytime that I clean it I treat the water with conditioner. Lately, about a week after I clean it, some weird white things start to form on the grabel and the water start to get clowdy. It's very difficult to describe but when I try to take them out from the grabel is very difficult. I took a sample of the water to Petsmart and they told me that the water was good and they couldn't identify the white formation in the water.

Answer
Hi Maria,
It is because the tank is not cycled yet.  The white stuff on the gravel is VERY common in new tanks.  It is just bacteria that are breaking down the organics which here happen to be the excess food.  It goes away by itself.  The cloudy water also is another sign that means the tank is in cycle.  Cloudy water means the tank has gone into a bacteria bloom to grow the necessary beneficial bacteria.  Cycling a tank with fish can take up to a month or longer.  You will need to remember to do frequent water changes because your tank is not saturated in beneficial bacteria yet so the toxins will build up and kill the fish.  The bacteria breaks down toxins, but it will take a whole to grow.
