Question

75 gal freshwater
I have a 75 gal fresh water aquarium that has been established for 2 years.  I have 2 medium sized Oscars a catfish about 18" long, about 6 convicts and 5 others that i don't remember the name.  My tank is cloudy and I cannot get it clear.  I have tried chemicals, that didn't work, i changed the water and that worked for about 6 hours.  I just put in a 2nd canister filter, one is a 3 stage and the other is a 4 stage, together they cycle about 700 gph.  The filters work great plenty of power, but i still cannot get the water clear.  Help, its driving me nuts.  Thanks for your time.  Also, I use not chemical filters, except for activated carbon filter, which i just use to control order.  I do have a fine filter on both canisters which scrubs the water and is supposed to make it clear.

Answer
Hi Thomas

First, your tank is extremely overcrowded. I would get a second tank for the Convicts. A 75 gallon is also too small for two Oscars. Both of them need at least 100 gallon tank. I would consider thinning out the population by either moving the Oscars to a larger tank with a Pleco or two, or by moving the Convicts to a tank of their own with a Pleco or two. Six Convicts will need at least a 50 gallon tank.

What is causing your cloudiness is a bacteria bloom, probably caused by excess fish waste. Both Oscars and Convicts are extremely messy fish and produce a lot of waste. I would do a 15% water change every couple of days and make sure you siphon the gravel well. Perform your weekly filter maintenance without fail.

Excess food that remains uneaten can also cause the milky water seen in a bacteria bloom. Regardless of the cause, don't panic over a bacteria blooms. Keeping the aquarium very clean by removing debris such as fish waste and uneaten food, vacuuming the gravel regularly, and performing partial water changes every couple of days, will quickly resolve most cases of a bacteria bloom. Until the water clears, cut back feeding to every second day, which will cut down on excess food decay.

Hope this helps you, good luck!
