paradise fish aggression

Question
Hi, I have been messing around with my fish tanks this week trying to clean them out of snails and this rapidly growing green hairlike looking weed.  I was curious if you had any idea what this weed might be and how best to get rid of it.

My other question is if I could put my Paradise fish with my two hand sized Angelfish in a 25 gallon tank.  I recently noticed my Cory catfish is missing an eye (he was in the same tank as the Paradise fish, and the Paradise fish has a history of killing Mollies).  On the other hand the Angelfish also have killed one of my other Angelfish and two Mollies.  I'm not sure what I want to do mainly because I don't like to leave too many tanks for my parents to take care of while I'm gone at college. I was considering giving the Paradise fish to a friend but I also doubt he would be happy in a small tank by himself.  The Paradise fish does seem to get along with my two African Dwarf Frogs which I've raise a couple batches of babies from.

Also, I was going to give one of my friends two of my baby African Dwarf Frogs and was thinking there might be some kind of cute colorful little fish that would go well with them. Since the frogs don't need a heater/bubbler/filter I would want a fish that would be okay with that and preferably likes to eat bloodworms/brine shrimp.

Answer
Hi Lauren,
The green hairlike looking weed is probably just "Hair Algae" which I've noticed can be common problem in tanks that receive too much light or have too many nutrients available for the algae. The easiest solution to this is to remove as much of it as you can. Try increasing your water changes extra and cut back on light. If you don't have live plants, you can leave the tank's light off for when you aren't around. Just try to limit their lighting schedule to no more than 9-10 hours a day.

You can certainly try the Paradise fish with the Angels. Sorry to hear about the cory, paradise fish can be quite vicious sometimes. But it's rare for them to do that much damage. Make sure they don't bother your angels. Sometimes paradise fish do best in their own aquarium, at least a 10gallon that is well-planted with either live or fake plastic plants. But they can live in smaller tanks. He really should get along OK with your African dwarf frogs.

Choosing fish for an environment that is unheated and unfiltered is tricky. But White clouds might work. They may not seem colorful in petstores but they can be very beautiful once they are in a healthy environment. They are cool-water fish and are small and they could probably survive without a filter. Something you might want to really look into are some live plants such as Java Fern, Java moss, water sprite, ect.. easy to care for plants that help keep the water clean by removing pollutants and giving off oxygen for aquatic life. White clouds are happiest when kept in as large a group as possible. But you'll have to be careful since your tank is likely quite small. Ideally no less than 4 should be kept.

Another fish option would be guppies. The "Feeder" kind that don't have the massive flowing tails. The so-called "Feeder" guppies are hardy and have really nice little spots of florescent colors. A few might be OK in an unheated/unfiltered environment but again, try to incorporate plants into your setup to help with water conditions and oxygen levels.

Don't forget the importance of frequent partial water changes of course!

I really hope this helps!
Best of luck!
Karen~
