Question
I have two tanks with Jack Dempsey that I have recently started feeding frozen beefheart, mosquito larvae, and plankton... all sanfrancisco bay brand. I have recently discovered small 1/2 inch thin worms and other smaller swimming creatures in the tanks. Most of these appear to be attached to the glass but do swim. Some of these worms have a reddish color but most appear milky clear. An attendant at a pet shop suggested these were from contaminated frozen food sources. The fish at this point don't appear to be bothered and are occasionally eating the intruders. Any idea on how to get rid of these pests.

Answer
Hi Allen,
These worms sound more like planaria. Planaria can be caused by overfeeding or too much uneaten food left in the substrate. They are harmless to fish although an annoyance. Clean your substrate with a syphon as best you can and do a water change. These worms will disappear if there is nothing left for them to eat.

Regards,
Chloe.
