Question

Guppy fish
Hello, I am new to fish breeding and have gotten a few fancy guppies to start with. So far everything has been good but last week one of my females got this odd growth on her back right behind her head. I don't know a lot about fish diseases but I do not think it is ick. at first it started as a small patch of light white stuff, sort of progressing into an area where either the scales were being pushed up with it growing underneath them or falling off and there being a sore. It's hard to tell. It started to spread to about double the size I originally noticed it being. But after that she started to get a few red spots on her body and pooped out this long slimy white looking string of stuff. When I noticed the very first sign of something being wrong I took her out of my main tank and put her in an isolation tank with some all in one parasite/fungal medicine. The progression of all the symptoms I mentioned before happened while I had her in this tank. It never seemed to get anything but worse until she finally died. This happened over a period of about 4 days.

Now, a week later ANOTHER one of my females is starting to show the same signs. Again, I have her in an isolation tank but its going just like the last one getting worse. Now she is not eating anymore. I attached an image with a pretty clear view of the stuff on her back.

I am just at a loss and don't want another one of my females to die. I'm also worried because I have 2 breeder nets in that tank full of babies and I would hate for them to catch something and die. Any help in figuring out what this is and how to treat it without loosing any more of my fish would be so greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Gabby

Answer
Hi Gabby,

The fish has a body rot, caused by a bacteria.  There are several kinds of rot.  Ie: Gill rot, Tail rot, Body Rot, Fin Rot, etc.  This is Body Rot.

Please go to the store and buy saltwater fish salt, for saltwater aquariums.  You can get a small amount for around $5.

Dose the hospital tank at a rate of 1 tsp per gallon, dissolved thoroughly.  Tomorrow, if the rot isn't gone, add another teaspoon per gallon.

Clean the main tank out thoroughly and replace its water, or dose it with salt as well.  If you choose to dose with salt, please make sure there are no live plants, invertebrates or loaches.  Those animals and plants do not do well with salt in the water.

You can take a precaution and leave 1 teaspoon of salt per gallon in your main aquarium forever, if you want to.  Just be sure no salt-sensitive inverts or plants are there, first.

I certainly hope that this helps.

Happy holidays and happy fish-keeping!
