Bettas Curling Fins

Question
Hi, I just bought my first betta about a month ago. He lives in a 2.5 g Mini-Bow with a Whisper filter, plants, gravel, etc. The tank is almost cycled (I didn't know about fishless cycling until after I got him) so the pH is about 6.8, consistent temp. of 82, ammonia is safe and nitrite is a little high but going down. I partially change the water every few days and daily remove food/excrement with a turkey baster. Once a week I vacuum the gravel and change 50% of the water (I let it sit for 1-2 days and add AquaSafe). If I think it needs it, I change the water more frequently.
Bluebird has a hearty appetite (he loves Hikari micro pellets- not crazy about freeze dried worms)and is active.
Recently, I noticed his fins starting to curl. And they just keep curling. I see no signs of fin rot. I believe he is a crowntail (about 50% reduction in webbing) and I have searched high and low for answers/remedies. So far, I have read that partial sunlight helps reverse the curling and conversely, I have read there is no cure. I just want to make sure he is healthy and if you know of any way to fix this problem (and what's causing it)! Thank you!

Answer
Hi Katie;

From my own research and reading on this I am told it is probably just a genetic trait. As your betta matures, it's fins are just doing what it's genes tell them to do. Keep the toxins as low as you can to help prevent damage from that, but there really isn't anything else I can suggest. I really think exposure to sunlight can be dangerous because the betta's water could easily become too hot. If you decide to try it, don't leave him unattended and watch the thermometer. It will also cause abundant algae to grow. Algae really isn't harmful, it just blocks the view of our beautiful fish.
