Answer
Hi Shelley,

Try to google 'Callamanus worms'.  It's an internal parasite that causes red worms to hang out of the anus at the advanced stages.  They are very hard to treat and extremely contagious.  The recommended treatment is Panacur but sometimes it has to be used over and over because these worms are just so difficult to kill.  Once they are hanging from the rectum this means that they are in the advanced stages of reproduction.

It's possible they got this from the petstore if they were newly aquired or in a tank with infected fish or ate a lot of live foods (breeders often feed live foods).

I would treat asap if after you read up you decide that this is what it is.  The faster it's treated the more likely you can cure it.  That would be the only thing that I can think of that causes pinkish strings to hang out.

Good luck : ) April M.
