29g cichlid tank too full?

Question

29g cichlid tank
I have a 29gal tank which houses African Cichlids. Currently I have : 2 cobalt blue zebras, 1 livingstonii, 2 botia yellow tails, 1 peacock, 1 yellow lab (2 died off) and a pleco. After being asked several questions at the pet store about if I would be willing to upgrade to a bigger tank after awhile, I said no and this is why the man at the pet store told me these fish would be appropriate for me and best for my tank size. The only problem I have had so far is with my male cobalt zebra - he killed one of my botia's a few days after I got him but now they are all fine together. Then my male cobalt went after my pleco and female cobalt, the female cobalt is in another tank and is looking a LOT better, the pleco is hard to catch but he stays hidden on the roof of the dinosaur mouth and his fins are looking better.
So my questions are :
Is this too many fish for my tank?
Should I take my beautiful male cobalt back to the pet store?
Should I add more hiding spots?

Answer
Hi Ashley,
I would not add more fish to that tank, but as is, it is possible that they will be okay together.  Whether you take your cobalt back is up to you.  As for adding hiding spots, the answer is always "yes".  More hiding spots make for a better tank.  I would even say that you can never have too many hiding spots.  The funny thing is that the more hiding spots you have, the less the fish will use them -- they know that the hiding spots are there if they need them. By contrast, if there is only a single hiding spot, a fish will tend to stay in it.
