Question
Tuxedo Platy?
Tuxedo Platy?
QUESTION: Hi, I have three fish in my tank. One is a neon tetra, one is a female albino cherry barb and the last is this pretty black and orange fish. Its a freshwater community fish that goes well with the other two, but I can't remember what it's called. Looking at other pics online, I am guessing a tuxedo platy, is that right?

We also just had babies in the tank and they are orange with black spots. So I'm assuming they are from this fish, what do you think? Question--can these breeds mate together or was the fish "pregnant" when we got it?

We have 6-7 babies and the 3 big fish. Will we need a 20 gallon tank for all of them? How many could we fit in a 10 gal tank (they are currently on in a 5 gal, we weren't planning on babies!). How do we keep them from breeding again?

ANSWER: Hello,
Yes that is a tuxedo platy, and I say there's a 99.9% chance she's responsible for the babies.

You can keep all of those fish even as adults in a 10 gallon tank. As for prevention of breeding, you can separate the males from the females, but that still may not work as females can store sperm inside their body for up to 7 months.

QUESTION: Thanks so much, its good to know that they will all be happy in 10 gals. Do you have any tips on how to transfer them all from the 5 gal tank to the 10 gal? Or any website links that are useful? There is so much info online that it's hard to weed through.

Thanks
Jessica

Answer
Ok, fill a bucket about 4" deep with water, net the fish inti the bucket, and acclimate them for about 20 minutes into the new tank. If you are worried about spreading algea or disease between the new tank, do the same as I have said, except do not dump the water form the bucket into the new tank, net them out of the bucket and place them in.

I'm sorry, at the moment I do not have any links for you, but this should suffice.
