Hi Logan,
Jack dempseys get way too large for a 10 gallon tank. An adult male Jack Dempsey is 8 or 9 inches long.
You would be much better with a pair of convict cichlids or better yet, a pair of butterfly cichlids, Anomalochromis thomasi.
Take a look at this page <http://cichlidresearch.com/simpleaquarium.html> for ideas on how to do this.

Hi Logan,
The easiest to breed are definitely convict cichlids. Another good one to try are rainbow cichlids. I also like a small South American fish called Nannacara anomala.
I don't think 10 gallons is enough space for a pair of firemouth cichlids.

Hi Logan,
I know for sure that Nannacara can breed quite happily in a 10 gallon tank -- I did it for years.

AnswerHi Logan,
Yes rainbows can breed in a 10 gallon tank. A 20 gallon would be better, but a 10 gallon will do it in a pinch.
It would be best if you put a bunch of plastic plants in there to provide some hiding places for the female.
