weaning process

Question
I am weaning my filly @ 8 months old.  I didn't do it sooner because of a long, stressful move to another state and at the advice of my vet to wait awhile due to the distance of our move and climatic changes.  Anyway, I have now moved my filly to an adjoining field where she can see mama over a fence but no more sucking.  I have also had them in separate stalls for a couple of months now. I put my filly in with my 2 month old bull to help relieve some separation anxiety.  Both mare and filly are doing great and do not seem to care about the where abouts of one another.  My question is how long before I can introduce my filly back to the herd?  I want to make sure mama is all dried up and don't have to start the process over again.

Answer
She should be fine to put back with her dam- Look at the mares milk to see if it looks dried up. Usually after that much time-the mare won't let the foal nurse.I would keep a close eye on them if you do reintroduce her back into the herd to make sure she isnt nursing- If she tries -you can purchase a No Wean halter-it keeps her from turning her head to nurse. Thanks and good luck!!
