Question

Blue in pasture
Hello,

Im new to the foal birthing thing. I have a QH mare (ex-broodmare) who is a rescue and is 367 days with foal. she has been bagging for about a week now, and still no foal. any advice would be great.

We have a little Filly who the QH is very Fond of. should we separate the 2 or ? they all are stalled separately at night. PLMK Im getting very nervous about the unborn foal, and MOM.

Answer
Hi Jenny,

I totally understand your concern about your mare being so far along in the pregnancy.

My question would be her actual breeding dates, considering she is a rescue mare.  Is it possible that she was actually bred later than what you were told?

Also, 367 days really isn't as bad as it sounds. (Although it is frustrating) I personally had a mare who did not foal until 375 days one year and everything was fine.  It has even been reported that some mares can hold out until 400 days.  It isn't very common, but it can happen.

If the mare isn't acting as though she is distressed or in pain, then you shouldn't worry yourself too much.  But if it is really driving you crazy, the best thing to do would be to have your vet out to palpate her, just to make sure that everything feels okay.

I wouldn't be worried about separating the mare from the filly that she is fond of.  It is not doing any harm to let them still be together.  Separating them may actually stress your mare out at this point.  Once her own foal is born, she will more than likely keep her buddy away by herself for awhile.

Believe me, I know how anxious it makes you with the mare being so far past 340 days.  If she just began bagging up a week ago, you could still have a few weeks left before she foals.  Just keep an eye on her and just try to be patient.  Or having the vet out to palpate can really ease your mind.

Happy foaling!
Sandy
