Question
what is the cycle of breeding shetland ponies? when can you breed them again after having a foul?

Answer
Hello, Thank you for being my first question. I hope I can help.Shetland ponies are just like the big horses, most people breed from March to October, mares show regular seasons lasting four to six days. These happen 14 to 16 days after the end of the previous season. Mares thus have a breeding cycle of around three weeks duration. They should come into heat around 5 days after delivering their foal. They will come into standing heat in the middle of this cycle therefore letting the stallion mount, instead of kicking him or running away. You  will see her vulva "blink" when she is in heat. She can be bred back at this time if she is very good health and fairly young. We usually wait until the fourth month because it is hard on the mare to make milk and be pregnant at the same time. I hope this helps you out. Feel free to e-mail me with any other concerns. Thank you.
