Question

I'm just wondering how old is too old to breed with my mare, she still comes into season, she is a 23 year old Appaloosa mare. She is a great mare and in great condition for her age and everyone i speak to says its never too late to get her in foal, it does'nt bother me if it is. Please help.

Answer
Hi Patricia,
At 23 years of age there can be complications. If she has not had a foal before then the complications increase. They can be harder to get in foal and have an increased risk of aborting the foal, she can also have endometriosis. It is more difficult to keep weight on an older pregnant mare then a younger one. There is an increased risk of the mare getting an infections as the vulva is much looser. All that be said, if you really want to breed her, then I would have the Vet do a complete reproductive exam.
