Performance mare breeding

Question

5 yr old mare
Currently have a 5 year old quarter horse performance mare. During the winter we don't do much but when it comes to spring/summer we ride/show quite a bit(halter, showmanship, western pleasure, trail, horsemanship ect#. We are considering breeding her this April/May. She is a maiden mare and the reason we are breeding her is because the World Champion halter stallion is getting older and its his last year to stand to the public so it may be our last chance to breed to him. Shes a great mare. My question is if we breed her in april/may will she be able to be shown/ridden later this spring and summer as we would during a regular show season? Also how much time off #if all goes well) should we give her after foaling before starting to ride again? We won't show her until the foal is weaned. Do maiden mares have more trouble getting pregnant? I know I may sound stupid we have raised 10-15 foals for showing our selves but our mares all were proven broodmares that never were shown/ridden after they became baby makers. Thanks for you time!

Answer
Hi- She could be ridden normally up to the last 4 months of her pregnancy- maiden mares usually have no trouble getting bred, It's the delivery you have to keep an eye on and wether or not she will be a good mama. the last 4 months I suggest light riding due to the foal's weight and her nutrition- I would wait until the foal is about 2 months old to start back riding- If you try to soon, the mare and foal with probably be whinnying non stop and she may even act uptrying to get back to her baby- not to mention the foal trying to get back to her and hurt itself. We actually had a colt tear himself up on a stall door-trying to bust through to get back to mama- he was 3 weeks old. Good luck!! sounds like you have a plan!! thanks. Heather
