Question
today i noticed that my mare is really large on one side of her utters. do not see any bites neither is it warm or hurt her. I bought her in Nov 08 anyway would this be a sign of foaling? thank you for your time stormy

Answer
Hi Stormy,

It would not be unusual for one side of the udder to begin filling before the other side does.

Whether or not this is an indication that she is pregnant is another story.

Hormones can sometimes make a mare's udder get a little puffy looking.  Some mare's udders will get puffy when they are in heat.

If she is pregnant and is far enough along for her udder to begin filling, she should look pregnant and you would be able to easily see and feel the foal moving in her belly.

Hope that helps,
Sandy
