Question
I have a 22 yr old pregnant quarter horse who is due around the end of october. I have only had her for 2 months, but I have noticed multiple soft welts developing all over her belly and on her sides. Some are large and some are small, so I thought maybe they were just bug bites. I'm worried about her however, because they are multiple. They usually disappear within a couple days, only to give way to a new set. They don't seem to bother her, nor are we medicating her, so it is not a reaction to a medication. We have her penned up and feed her burmuda hay and 10% mixed with mare and foal and vitamins. Do you know what could be causing these welts?

Answer
Hi- I was wondering if you have wormed her for bots??? It the lumps are small that could be what it is. We had a similar case with an older mare that was also bred. We thought it was blood vessels that were rupturing under the skin. They too went away and came back. this mares belly was huge and there was a lot of weight for her to carry. She could also be allergic to something in the feed. To find out- take her off the feed and feed her with just pasture and hay for a few days. we found out that our mare was allergic to barley in the feed and then hers went away. I hope this helps- If it gets worse or this doesn't work-I would contact a vet. Thanks and good luck.
