Pictures of a mare 6 months to foaling.

Question
I've had her palpated and the closest guess she could give was at least six months. I was hoping for some visuals to compare to and see if she maybe further along? I can now put her tail over her back with no fight and her udders and starting to fill but nothing major. Her vulva has gone from 3 in to 5 in. I can express milk mostly the yellow sticky stuff sometimes clear? Can you give me any other help?

-----Question-----
Can you give me some pictures of mare from 6 months pregnant to ready to foal? I need to compare them to the mare I have and try and determine when she is due. I don't have any specific due date other than she is at least 6 months in foal a month ago.

         Thank you Shanna

Photos will do you no good in determining the gestation of your mare.  A veterinarian can do an ultrasound or rectally palpate and give you a good estimate of the age of the fetus.

Answer
If your mare is close to foaling, her vulva will be very relaxed.  The muscles around her tailhead, on either side of her tail will feel like a rotten cantaloupe to the touch.  Some mares will go off feed but mine never do.  I would recommend that you go to yahoogroups.com and then equinerepro.com.  Look in the archives there for photos and more details to the answers to your questions.  As your mare nears foaling her shape will change.  Looking from the back she would look like she had swallowed a 55 gallon drum but when she is near foaling the foal will move into position and the "barrel shape" will disappear and a more pear shape will be seen under her stomach.  Our mares ALWAYS clean out before foaling and are very alert and fussy about everything being perfect and safe before they lie down to foal. Hope this helps.
