Question
i bought a miniature shetland pony in sep 09 and was told she had been running with a shetland stallion for 5 months prior i got my vet out 2 weeks ago to check her over as she has gone huge over the last 5 weeks she hasnt put weight on her bum or neck it is all belly which is all diffrent shapes my vet came out and said she does look heavily pregnant and it looks like she has a week to 2 weeks left she has 2 swollen lumps infront of her nipples about he size of tennis balls which she didnt have a couple of months ago the vet took some blood to check everything was going ok she then phoned me last monday to say the blood test(oestros sulpate) had come back as 1 so the foal must be dead she said they were goimg to have to come out and scan her and they might have to cut the foal up inside her to get it out or take her in and give her a ceserian i was devestated she then came out on last wednesday she was supposed to be scanning her but she didnt she palpated her and said she couldnt feel a foal but her cervix was open so she could get one finger inside she then examined her all over and said there must be a foal there and it is still alive cause she can feel it moveing and pushing back at her she then decided to sedate her and give her a relaxant and give her a rectal exam she then said she is not in foal as she cant feel anything she said her ovaries seem fine and her uterus but she will take some blood to rule out a tumba and diabetes they came back as she is fit and healthy she told me she just doesnt no what it is she has never come across a case like it cause she really looks heavily pregnant she then told me to stop giving her the stud mix as it must be that what is giving her the symptoms of pregnancy but she only gets 2 small handfulls aday and 2 slices of hay her appetire has grown to i just dont no what to think one minute the vet is saying she is pregnant then the foal is dead then its alive then there is no foal there im just concerned for my little girls health from what ive told you here would you say she is pregnant i cant sleep cause im constantly worrying about her thank you for takin the time to read this

Answer
Hi- I personally would seek another vet to look at her, or maybe consider an x-ray. Im sorry but this is the only advise I can give. I have never had a case like this, especially where I could feel a foal and then not feel it.I would think she is heavily bred judging by her udder filling and her appearance, but it also could be a false pregnancy-if the foal were dead-she would go septic and die shortly. Please seek another vet or get an ultrasound to ease your mind. a vet school may do it for you for cut rate to teach the students. Please let me know what you find out! Thanks and sorry I can't be of more help.
