Question
I have bought 2 yr old filly to break in but when i come to put the bit in her mouth she shakes her head vigerously. She will not let me look in her mouth,or anywhere near it without throwing her head in the air and shaking it up and down. This could possibly be why she was in the sales, she is very quite in every other way.

Answer
I would recommend that you first take this filly to the vet to have her teeth checked.  She is a 2 yr. old and may have some caps that need to be removed.  If her teeth are not the problem....
get a jar(or two) of molasses and a bucket of water and a rag. The molasses is for her the water is for you.  First accostome her to the taste of the molasses by sticking your finger in the molasses and then onto her tongue where the bit would lie in her mouth.  Once she is willingly and eagerly wanting the molasses, useing a snaffle bridle without the reins, fold the bit and dip it into the molasses and then into her mouth.  Make sure the bit isn't adjusted too tightly.  Have the bit where she can "pick it up and put it where its comfortable in her mouth".  After two or three times of bridling her with the molasses, she should be fine with carrying a bit. I hope this helps.  It works very well for me and our horses will pick up a bit and suck on it, carrying it quietly and calmly.  Good luck and be patient.  A 2 yr. old is still a baby even if she's a big baby.
