Breeding older mare

Question
I have a 20 year old mare who I want to breed She has had two foals about 6 years ago. Is it safe to breed her?

Answer
Hi Cameron,
I tend to avoid breeding mares this age unless they have been having foals safely, at least every two years. There can be too many complications. If you do want to go ahead with it, then you will need to have the mare undergo a full breeding exam by a reproduction expert. You should also want to have the mare have a complete health exam. The chances for a problem with the foal or foaling will be increased.
