Answer
Hi Isaac,

MOST mares will foal on their own without any complications.  But there are always things that can go wrong and honestly, that's a lot of ground to cover.
The best thing I can tell you to do if you want to know everythiing "inside and out" of what to do, is to get yourself a copy of the book, "The Complete Book of Foaling."  It is an absolutely wonderful tool to have for first time foaling.  Even if it isn't your first time, it is still great for reference.
This book pretty much goes over everything from telling you how to prepare for foaling, helping you to determine when your mare is going to foal, the first signs of labor, clear through the birthing process and after care of the mare and foal.
It will go over some of the things that can go wrong during foaling, and how you can take care of it, or when you need to call the vet.

If foaling your mare out on your own really makes you nervous... look around your area for a foaling facility to board her at for the event.  There are places that will take your mare in and foal her out for you.  But if you're going to do that, I would put her there at least 30 days prior to her due date.

But seriously, look for that book online and buy it!  Not only will it give you all the info you need to prepare for foaling, but it also has a lot of info on the foal's first hours/days of life.

I hope that helps.
