Mare in heat

Question
I have recently had my 3 year old Appaloosa broke. She came home from the trainers over a month ago and she has been doing great. I have her in with an older gelding and has been with him since she was 6 months old. This past weekend we took her to a farm to ride. She did great, like an old pro. On Sunday we went back with 4 other geldings. She was a completely different horse with the others around, she started bucking and rearing (which she has not even came close to before). As long as the other geldings were not near her rear or she was behind her she would calm down. It would appear that she is in heat. What else would make her react like that? Or what can we do to prevent this from happening? Are there supplements that we can give her to help calm her?

Answer
Hi Missy- You are probably right on the dot about her being in heat. Mares can be very moody at times, and some show it more than others do.She is just letting the "boys" know she is ready to be bred. There is a paste that is called Be calm paste -you can order it out of Jeffers livestock or your local Tractor Supply may have it. I would try it on her. You can also cut the corn out of her diet to calm her down more. There really isnt much you can do except for using precaution around her time of the month. I wish you luck!! Thanks for your question -Heather
