Question
Hi, I have a 5yr old Shetland stallion and I am interested in a mare with filly foal at foot.  The mare is about 7yr old and the foal about 11 months.  The mare is healthy so i think she could be covered but I am wondering what age the filly may start with her seasons?

Answer
Hi- I would not put the stallion with the filly. She can come into heat at anytime and you do not want to breed her this early. The filly and mare should be separated if she is still nursing. It is OK to breed the mare but at least wait until the filly is 2 years old for the stallion to cover her. thanks
