Question
Hi. I bought a mare from a sale barn a month ago. I've been noticing she seems to look as if she's getting a little fat. I checked her teats and she has a clear liquid that can be "milked" from them. Since she was sold at a sale barn, and not by her owner, I have no clue on her history. Could this be a sign of pregnancy?

Thanks

Answer
Hi Lexi,

A clear fluid that can be expressed from a mare's udder is not always a sign of pregnancy.

Some mares that have had previous foals will always have clear fluid that is present in their udder.

The fatness could be due to getting more or better quality of food than she previously had.

Without a pregnancy exam, it is going to be difficult for you to know if she is pregnant or not until she were about 7-8 months into the pregnancy, when you would actually be able to feel foal movement.

If it is something you need to know right now, then I would have her palpated.

Best of luck.
