Mare is still bleeding

Question
Lisa...
I spoke with you last Saturday, about the signs of when the mare might deliver. As of today still no baby and she still get dripage of blood from vulva. Not enough to drop on ground just enough for it to dry at the bottom of her slit. Baby is still moving. When she lays down for awhile and then gets up her back legs are stiff, like they have cramped or something. Should I be getting alarmed? Or still normal activity for a preg mare?

Answer
It is common for a pregnant mare's legs to be stiff when they rise as they are carrying the extra weight of the foal. The normal gestation period for a mare is from 320-340 days, though some mares have been known to go as late as 380.  If you can feel the foal moving and your mare is eating and drinking, then you should not worry. You may want to have a Vet palpate her to make sure that the foal is in the correct position and your Vet could give you an idea on how far along she is.
